Getting In Shape SUCKS!!!

GETTING IN SHAPE SUCKS

I did it AGAIN! I let myself get totally out of shape. Granted I have a good excuse, I gave birth, so I'm not being too hard on myself. But, this still sucks!

I did, I got out of shape. And, while getting out of shape is truly super sucky getting back into shape is the suckiest suck of all.

Gone are the days where a 2 hour intense workout session would barely phase me. No more are the times of countless lunges without so much as a hint of burn. Sayonara to those workouts when it was difficult to get my muscles to be sore.

Oh yes, these are long gone.

They have been replaced with their distant cousins named 'Tired,' 'Achey,' 'Sore' and 'Whiney.'

This is HARD! Getting in shape is HARD!!!

TIRED
Adding physical activity into an already full life is exhausting. It takes time to adapt to the added physical demand an exercise routine brings. In the mean time I'm really dang tired. It's important that I stay focused and motivated and only aim for small gains each week so I don't poop myself out.

ACHEY
My body aches. My feet ache, my knees are unhappy, my back is frustrated and my legs want a vacation. Of course none of this has anything to do with the fact that I'm getting older, of course not! I must remember to be kind to my body and allow it to rest enough each day. It's ok to give myself massages, roll my bare feet over a tennis ball, roll my body around on a foam roller, and meditate.

SORE
With every step, every reach, every bend down and every stand up I wince. My muscles are being
begged, coerced and dragged back to activity and they are fighting it every 'rep' of the way. Don't get me wrong, I actually love muscle soreness. It means that I challenged my muscles well and as they repair they are getting stronger. But in this, the beginning stages of getting back in shape EVERYTHING is sore. Every muscle is crying for me to stop and lie back down on the couch. I will not listen. I know better. I know that these muscles are capable of greatness and in time they will cry when I do lie on the couch, idle and still, for they will crave movement and activity. I just have to keep pushing them little by little.

WHINEY
Whining when tired, achey and sore from working out is a right of passage. It's my way of rubbing my new found activity in the face of anyone who will listen . It's just what us fit people do and we love it. REMEMBER THIS: Whining to people about your tired, achey and sore body is an insurance policy. Once you whine you can never give up the fight for fitness for if you do all those annoyed coworkers and friends who listened to you bitch countless times will be there, circling like vultures ready to pounce and gloat in your failure. Don't give them that satisfaction. The only way to win is to reach your goal and maintain it and rub that in their faces too. For that is the sweetest victory of all.

I have said this before, and I hope I mean it this time, I am NEVER getting out of shape again. It's so dang easy to lose and so freakin hard to get back.

But I will push a little more this week than last week and I will not stop challenging my little body to be stronger, faster, fitter and healthier for this is how I will reach my goals. This is how I will build endurance and ability. This is how I will be able to keep up with my kids and play with them for years to come. This is how I will push my body to the place where I know it belongs.

If you are reading this please take solace in the fact that a former Fitness Model and Group Fitness Instructor is clawing her way into shape too. Getting into shape is hard for everyone - it's the attitude that separates those who get there and those who don't. So whine all you want and say hello to Tired, Achey and Sore. But do it with humor and appreciate your able body at every stage. Don't give up. We'll all get there soon enough.

A Tingling Sensation and the Power of Prayer...

I just had the most amazing experience and I wanted to share it, so here I am, blogging about it.

I recently (exactly 3 months ago today to be exact) had my second c-section. Along with beautiful children my c-sections also gave me a pretty gnarly scar.

Every evening I massage my scar hoping to reduce scar tissue and minimize discoloration over time. I use my homemade organic lotion. I massage in a clockwise and a counter clockwise manner. Then I massage up and down. And I massage left to right. This is my little routine.

I massage for a few minutes after a shower and then go about my usual business of brushing my hair, putting on  my pjs, etc.

Tonight, however, was different for me.

Tonight I did something a little different that gave me a very unexpected result that has really affected me.

Tonight, while massaging my lotion into my c-section scar I decided to pray. I massaged with my hands, and while I did I prayed. I thanked my body and God for giving me two beautiful children. I prayed for healing in my body and in that area in particular. I expressed gratitude for the science that can perform that operation so well and so safely.

And that was it.

I finished my massage and started about my usual business.

But then I felt something. Something, in all the hundreds of times, with both surgeries, I had never felt before. My scar started to tingle.

It started small. Just a tiny little tingle. But then it grew and the entire scar, from end to end was radiating a tingling, buzzing, warm sensation that felt nothing short of magical .

It lasted a little shy of 2 minutes and then faded away in the same way it had arrived.

I felt wonderful. I felt strong. I felt amazing peace. It was a beautiful and fantastic experience.

This just goes to show how our energies can affect the body. Who knows if my scar will heal better or faster due to this tingling? All I know is that sending my body love produced the most wonderful physical reaction in my body that I would love to feel all the time.

Send your body love. Give it a try at every chance you get. Who knows what miracles might begin to brew?

Anyone can do a Burpee - 6 Levels of Burpees to Choose From

Anyone Can Do A Burpee
6 Levels of Burpees to Choose From

The groan of dread and despair. The grunt. The eye roll. The whining "Nooooo." And the ultimate exclamation, "I can't do those!!!"

These are the typical responses from clients and class participants when I announce that we will be doing BURPEES.

Burpees, poor, dear burpees, have gotten a nasty wrap in the fitness world. Labeled as the terrible exercise of doom people are scared of these innocent little exercises.

I know why! I've seen those insane YouTube videos of super advanced level burpees on crack. You know the ones - they require that you also possess the ability to fly. These scare me too. But I know something about every single exercise there is in the world... there are modifications to make it work for ANYONE. And the same goes for BURPEES.

WHY BURPEE?
What's so great about a burpee anyhoo?
A burpee works the entire body in a variety of ways. The bending of the knees to lower yourself to the floor and then returning to standing from the floor simulates a squat and works the entire lower body. When the feet are out on the floor behind you and your body is flat it simulates a plank and works the entire core, the chest, shoulders, back, biceps and triceps. The jumps are power moves and work your cardiovascular system and increase strength and explosion in your legs.
So, you see, a burpee is a power packed beast of an exercise. It can get you some serious fitness results and fast. What's there to hate about THAT????

I'm writing today to let you know that the burpee need not be your enemy. You, too, can learn to love the burpee. Here's how..

FIRST
Don't try to do a burpee level that is far beyond your CURRENT fitness level and ability. Be smart! Workout smart and live to workout another day.

SECOND
Always modify exercises so that they work for you. It's YOUR burpee, make it whatever you want it to be. Get creative and have fun with them. There are no burpee police who will give you a citation for not doing it the 'right' way.

THIRD
Quit being a scaredy cat and making burpees evil with the power of your mind. You can totally psych yourself into and out of anything just by making them smaller or bigger in your head. Get your mind right. Practice that CAN DO attitude and do a dang burpee for goodness sake.

Here are a few videos I put together to help YOU find a burpee that works for you.

(If you haven't already, be sure to join the 100 Day 100 Burpee Challenge. You can find all the info on my facebook event page HERE. It's not too late to join. You can just do two days each day until you're caught up, or even just jump in now and start with TODAY. Again - no rules and no Burpee police. Just have fun!)

6 Reasons I say "MAKE A VISION BOARD!"

6 Reasons I say "MAKE A VISION BOARD!"

To vision board or not to vision board.
THAT is the question.

No matter the topic there are always those in support and those in opposition. And, like all things in this world, that is true of vision boards.

I'm not really sure why one would take a passionate stance against vision boarding. But some have.

If you do a search of Vision Boards you'll see a bunch of articles on why not to make one.
I think this is just plain ridiculousness. It's like writing an article on why NOT to paint a picture, or read a book, or sing a song!

WHAT IS A VISION BOARD??

It's basically just a collage where you put pictures and words together as a visual representation of your goals and dreams that you want to have come true.
It's YOUR creation so you can make it whatever you want it to be. You can use photographs, pictures from magazines, images from the web, words and letters that you cut out, you can write on it, draw on it, paint on it, glue things to it, or anything else that you choose to do to make the board your own creation.
There are no 'wrong' things on YOUR Vision Board.

WHY I LOVE VISION BOARDS

1.) It helps you focus on your true desires.

2.) You put your goals on paper and put them out into the universe - this creates a totally different energy with your intentions than just thinking about your goals.

3.)It may actually help manifest your dreams and goals.
If you have ever read or watched 'The Secret' (if you haven't be sure to check it out) you understand the Power of Intention. This theory states that putting your thoughts and goals out into the universe creates an energy and the entire universe will conspire to help you reach those goals. I love this theory and I believe it.

4.) Looking at your Vision Board daily can help you to stay focused on what matters and keep you on task to work only on those things that matter and that will help you to reach your goals.

5.) Get friends together to make them - it's a fun, different and pretty cool thing to do with friends.

6.) They're fun to make.

I love making Vision Boards. I have made many. And let me tell you something, it is freakishly bizarre how the things I put onto a vision board actually come to pass.
From finding the love of my life, to having children, to moving back to Florida, to making more money, to owning a home... I dreamed BIG on my Vision Boards this past three years and ALL these things have all come to pass in a short amount of time.

I like to say that 'The Proof Is In The Pudding.' Which means, try it for yourself, if it works for you then it works! It doesn't matter what anyone else says :)

Once you have made your vision board it is important to share it with a supportive soul. Get those dreams out into the universe. Show a friend, share it online, send me a pic - I'd love to shower you with support for YOUR dreams.

Vision Boards are a fun way to creatively express your dreams and goals. If they do help you manifest your dreams into fruition then awesome. But, even if they don't they are fun to do and help you focus on what you really want.

I'd LOVE to see a picture of YOUR Vision Board. Please share it on my Social Media pages (see links below).

How To Get Ready For A 'Kid Free' Night Out in 3 Easy Steps

Tonight I have "PLANS."

Real, actual PLANS. With a girl friend. No kids. No husband. A girls night out to go and see the musical 'Dirty Dancing.'

My daughter is 7 weeks old today. My son is 2. We just finished remodeling our new home and have been slowly moving in, with the BIG official move happening this coming weekend. All these things teamed up with a whole laundry list of other stuff I won't bore you with, and...

Life has been utter MADNESS - to say the least.

When my girl friend offered me a ticket to go to the show I jumped at the opportunity.

If you have kids you KNOW that getting a night out is pretty much UNHEARD OF!
I had to rally HARD to make this happen. I had to stick to my guns and not take 'no' for an answer when asking my husband and mom to watch the kids (yes it takes two people to do this).

I'd like to give you my tips to making your 'night away' happen seamlessly (and by seamlessly I mean that you actually DO get to go out).

Here goes..

1.) Do You Love Me? (aka getting a 'sitter')
Part A. Tell your husband, mother, or caregiver about your plans and get their 'ok' that they can watch the kids as FAR IN ADVANCE as humanly possible (I suggest 1-2 weeks). Ask them at least THREE times to make sure.
Part B. Tell the 'sitter' that you need them to be at your home and ready to 'take over' at least ONE hour earlier than the time you actually need to leave the house (this gives you time to get ready in a hurry should you not have a chance to tend to yourself before the sitter arrives).
Part C. Remind them EVERY SINGLE DAY the week leading up to your night out.
Part D. Remind them THREE times the day of your night out. DO NOT just text or leave messages. You MUST actually speak with them to be absolutely SURE they get the information, and don't 'accidentally' forget.
Ask them to arrive EARLIER than you originally 'scheduled' them to arrive (this puts pressure on them to at least arrive on time).
Part E. Prepare a WORD document of information for EACH child for a caregiver including emergency contact information, tips and tricks for keeping your kids happy, translations for key words your kid says that NO ONE else in the world can understand, favorite toys and treats that you use to BRIBE your kid to stop crying and listen to you, etc. Email document to 'sitter' the day before your scheduled 'night out' AND print up 2 copies and post in highly visible places in your home.
Part F. Prepare all foods, snacks, bottles, sippy cups, special toys, movies, DVR favorite shows, and anything that you can think of that will make your kids happy in your absence IN ADVANCE (like the DAY BEFORE).

2.) Big Girls Don't Cry (aka 'what to wear')
If you recently had a child then most likely the idea of 'getting dressed' is a source of stress for you. When pants that used to fit no longer fit past your thigh it can be depressing and devastating. SO, plan your outfit DAYS in advance. And don't be an idiot by trying on pre-pregnancy clothes when you know good and well that they won't fit yet!
Wear pregnancy clothes from the 1st or 2nd trimester that are cute and a little lose on you. Make sure they're clean and pressed and hidden from mucky hands and any possibility of disaster.
HAVE A BACK UP OUTFIT. You MUST have a 'PLAN B' outfit clean and pressed in your closet for any possible emergency situation that might arise as you try to walk out of the door.

3.) The Time of My Life (aka 'getting ready')
This is where the real challenge begins. If this is your first rodeo let me tell you this... If it used to take you 2 hours to get ready to go out before kids then you need to add TWO hours for EACH child that you currently have. Yes, add TWO hours. I have TWO kids so I need to budget SIX hours to get ready. And by 'get ready' I mean shower (with shaving), eat some food, blow dry and style hair, apply make-up and get dressed. And this is nothing elaborate, this is solely to look presentable.
To be on the safe side I suggest multiplying that time by TWO as well, just in case. So I need TWELVE hours to get ready. Yep, that sounds about right.

Which brings me to this...
What the crap am I doing writing a blog right now? I only have 7 hours until the show and I'm only half way done with the list above. I gotta go Ya'll. Hope you found these tips helpful.

From GREAT to awful and now clawing my way back again...

I am 6-weeks post c-section.

On the day of my daughter's birth I lost 10 lb in one day. But that's because my little girl was not so little at a whopping 9lb 10 oz.

Surgery went great. A bazillion times better than my first c-section. With my first I could barely walk for weeks. This time I was walking upright the next day. The pain was less, I had hardly any swelling of my feet and legs. It was great. I felt great.

And so I did stoopid shit.

5 days after surgery I strapped my new born to myself in a wrap, put my 2 year old in a cart and went shopping at Target. 1/2 way through my shopping excursion I realized that I maybe shouldn't have done that. I rested a few days after that and started to feel good again.

So I strapped my heavy ass newborn to myself again and went shopping at Home Depot, walking the aisles for at least an hour (we're in the midst of a home remodel). Again, I felt like doodoo for a few days after that. So I rested.

I continued this pattern of making bad choices and then resting for 3 weeks. Toward the end of this 3 weeks I started lifting my 24 lb 2 year old son up. I felt good and strong so I figured I would just do it, I was sick of waiting for my mom or husband to help me with him all the time. After 2 days of that I noticed a big 'Uh Oh.' My surgery incision opened up a tiny bit on the end.

I was getting dizzy and nauseous and I just did not feel well at all. A call to my midwife and they said to come right in right away.

My midwife sat me down and had a coming to Jesus with me.

I was to spend the next 3 weeks on almost bed rest. I was firmly told that I had been doing dumb stuff for a person who had just been cut open only a few weeks before. She said if I didn't rest that things could get very bad for me very fast. My wings were clipped. But she was right. I cried my little eyes out in her office as the exhaustion and super woman syndrome all just enveloped me and became too much to bear.

I had been doing way too much. As a result I was losing a lot of pregnancy weight, fast. I was pretty happy about that part.

3 weeks of modified bed rest and my final visit to the midwife and I'm all healed and have been given the ok to SLOWLY start activity again. With strict instruction to not 'be an idiot' (her words I swear, lol). Which is great news. However, the 3 weeks of rest resulted in absolutely no weight loss since my last visit. I was quite disheartened by this.

(disclaimer: I know I'm doing extremely well. I know this so please don't get me wrong. My goal is to be ready for live television as a fitness model in the next few months. This is a big goal that is not the norm so my standards for myself are very high. You must find goals and standards that work for you in your world. Do not compare your journey to mine. Find your own path. As long as you are making yourself proud then you're doing great.)

6-weeks post c-section number 2 (side view)

I had to remind myself that I accomplished so much more than weight loss. I had been healing after a major operation. I had slowed down enough to breath and BE with my new little girl and share many wonderful moments with her and my son without always being on the go.

6-weeks post c-section number 2 (front view)

But now it's time to get my arse in gear. I have to be smart and safe but I have to be disciplined and meticulous. It's difficult enough to find time to pee with a newborn, let alone a new born and a 2 year old. Now I must also find time to exercise and eat right.

I'm praying for strength and energy and clarity to be able to handle all of these challenges.

For me I'm doing this for my fitness career so that I can make a comfortable living and enjoy fantastic, stress free times with my family. This motivates me to stay strong and stay committed to my goals.

What motivates YOU to reach your health and weight loss goals? What will keep you on track when those cookies are calling? What will get you out of bed to exercise when all you want to do is hit snooze and get 10 more minutes?

You have to find a 'why' that is greater than YOU. It has to be bigger than you or it won't fire you up and pull on your heart.

My why is a visual image of me, my husband and my kids running around on the beach in the sun enjoying long days together playing and laughing and not working or worrying about bills. This vision is so strong that it will knock-out any temptation to cheat on my plan to eat healthy and exercise.

Find your reason. I'd love to hear about it. Share it with me below.

A Pregnant Fitness Healthy Role Model - NOT!!!!!

A friend sent me a link to an article today about a series of Prenatal Fitness videos with a popular athlete leading the exercises while she is pregnant.

The article is the author's feelings on how unrealistic the videos are for 'regular' people. The routine seems to be one that only a pregnant athlete can complete.

The article is about 'Fit Shaming' pregnant women.

When I was pregnant with my first child at the age of 34/35 I had a plan to be a fit pregnant super star. I was going to be the poster child for fitness during pregnancy. I would not succumb to cravings. I was going to continue to prepare all my clean eating food and eat measured amounts of calories every few hours and maintain my usual routine with modifications to allow for additional calories for creating life.

At 24 weeks with my first pregnancy.

I would NEVER be one of 'those' women who ate uncontrollably and gained tons of weight in pregnancy. How could I be? I am a fitness professional. And I KNOW how to eat. I would be a preggo to emulate.

Bwahahahah! Boy was I W-R-O-N-G!!!

I ate a diet of 80% milk chocolate and 20% dark chocolate for the first 10 weeks of my first pregnancy. I hated ALL other food. The rest of my pregnancy my diet consisted of potatoes and bacon, and a few other things. I hadn't eaten pork in 17 years but I made up for lost time in the 9 months I was 'creating life' let me tell you!!!

At my St. Pete Baby Shower

Suffering from pain from a car accident in my first trimester prevented me from lifting weights so I lost a lot of muscle. But what I lost in muscle, I gained in fat.

Then a month of bed rest followed by a c-section had me jiggling and sagging in places I didn't know I could jig or sag.

Needless to say, I was NOT a Pregnant Fitness Role Model for all to envy.

It was a huge reality check to learn that I couldn't have eaten healthy if I tried. My body had other plans. And it's plan was to eat fat! This is what I needed to create an amazing little person I guess.

I felt like a total ass face for all the times in the past that I had judged pregnant women for eating so poorly during pregnancy. Karma is a beast I tell ya. And I got mine :)

As humans all we can do it try our best on a daily basis. Sometimes our 'best' is shit! And that's ok. If that's all we can do today, then that's all we can do. As long as we're doing the best we can in the given situation how can we possibly ask for more. On most days my best was BACON!

Want to see MY 'realistic' pregnancy fitness videos?
Find them all on YouTube under 'Prenatal Fitness with Gemma' there are about 15 videos in the series. Enjoy!
